How to Deal With Headache?

A pain in the head or in the upper neck is what we call the "headache". All people experience headache at some time in their lives and have hard times in dealing with it. Usually, it occurs during long, tough working hours, and had stress as its major cause including physical and emotional stress. Headaches can be categorized into two, the primary and secondary headache. Tension, migraine, cluster headache belongs to primary headache while secondary headache occurs because of brain tumor, infections (meningitis), and injury. Almost 90% of adults suffer tension headaches most common to women than men.

Generally, headache is caused by disturbances in the pain-sensitive structures in the head. Stress, negative emotions, chemical, and food factors are apart from these. Some considered headaches as not life-threatening, but you never know when it will be. So don’t forget for regular check-up and take medicines as needed. In addition to these medicines, you need to have self-care measures. There are various kinds of medications for headache at the same time for prevention. Like oral tablets that need to be swallowed with water, and those tablets that disintegrate and need no water. Oral tablets are only for fewer pain medications or for immediate headache pain relief. You can also ask for references or follow what your doctor prescribes.

However, over the counter medicines just give timely relief and do not completely give treatment to headache. These medicines have side effects and when taken frequently for longer time will lose their effects. There are also lots of natural ways for headache pain relief, which are also effective. You need first to identify the cause of the headache because natural remedies for serious headaches like cluster and migraine is not so helpful.

Some helpful natural alternatives for headache relief:

•         You should have some physical exercise like jogging, brisk walking, swimming, and lifting weights. This improves your bloods circulation, thus releasing you from tension. In this way, you can relieve you from stress.

•         Have a hot bath to prevent your muscles from contracting. This is the best thing to do when you have tension headache.

•         Reduce caffeine intake. Also, be moderate in eating foods like cheese, nuts, eggs, chocolates, processed meats and drinking red wine because they have chemical food components that cause headache.

•         Less or excessive sleep daily can cause headaches, too. So make sure to have the right amount of sleep needed to avoid a headache.

•         You can also relieve stress through massage. You can apply the therapy on the head, shoulders and neck. Some people say that massage therapy is the best stress reliever.

•         One of the reasons for muscle contraction is dehydration, thus giving you a headache. So drink at least 9-10 ounces glasses of water. This helps maintain your body’s temperature too.

•         If you have caffeine or sinus headache, better to apply a hot or cold compress to relieve yourself.

•         When you work, have yourself in the proper posture to prevent stress to your neck or shoulders thus preventing you from headache.

•          Long exposure of blurry or bright lights can cause headaches, so it would be better not to expose yourself too much with bright lights.
